Just Jam at The Barbican

Two legendary shows

We were asked by the Barbican to produce, curate and execute 2 unique live experiences at their 2000 seat concert hall. The core aims of the project were to attract a younger demographic to the Barbican and work with the Just Jam team to scale up their broadcast to the vast Barbican stage.

About

The first show featured artists such as Skepta, Omar Souleyman & Big Narstie performing in front of a 20m screen that fed back live images of the performance mixed with custom made visuals from renowned digital artists. As part of the experience each artists set was programmed to be matched with a digital artists work. As well as creating an engaging experience for those in the room, the show was live streamed to a global audience of over 130,000 people.

Following the success of the first event, a second show was commissioned. This time we decided to focus on a more grassroots lineup featuring some of London’s most exciting breakthrough acts including Kenny Allstar (BBC Radio1), Afro B and Novelist. For this show we upped the creative ante, draping a translucent screen between performers and audience, and broadcasting the show and visuals live onto the screen to create a holographic Blade Runner-esque aesthetic.

What we did

  • Show creative concept.
  • Technical production.
  • Musical artist curation, commission and liaison.
  • Visual artist creation, curation and liaison.
  • Barbican youth academy workshop.

Barbican Youth Academy

For each event we hosted week long workshops for 16-24 year olds. The first focused on four disciplines- each linked to “Just Jam”: DJing, videography, music production & MCing. Each discipline focused on two elements; practical training from a young professional in the field, followed by one-on-one mentoring from seasoned industry professionals.

The second series of workshops focused on young people taking the wheel and producing a “Just Jam” show. A group of 30 young people were trained over a week to film, live edit, produce visuals & VJ. This culminated in the students running a public “Just Jam” show at Barking Broadway Theatre.
